Are There Still Witches Today?
Yes, there are still witches around today. Most modern witches practice what is known as Wicca. Wicca, as it is practiced today has been around since the beginning of the 20th century. Contrary to what some may believe, Satan has no part in Wicca. Wicca also draws on history. Wicca is a pagan religion based on old combining some old mystical traditions.
Among these are:
- The worship of Greek and Roman goddesses
- The spiritual traditions of ancient Egypt
- Celtic or Norse pagan spiritual beliefs
- Eastern Shamanism
- Some Native American spiritual practices
Some or perhaps all of these may be included depending on the group or person practicing Wicca. Wicca can be classified as a neo pagan religion. This is defined as any religion that finds it’s roots in a pagan religion. Wiccans strive for creativity, empowerment and building ones personal relationship with the divine. In this case the divine refers to the mother goddess or the spiritual connection to the earth.
Wiccans are nature oriented, and have a deep connection to the earth. It is believed that we cannot be at peace if we have a disconnect with Mother Earth. We need to take care of the planet we live on. In return for their faith, the gods and spirits of nature grant them magic. Wiccans spell this magick, to differentiate between theirs and the type of magic performed by magicians.
Witch is a good word when it comes to the practice of Wicca. It has no evil connotations with the people who practice this faith. They are not out to do evil or cast black magic spells. Wiccans are peaceful people. They draw on the energies of the universe. Wicca promotes spiritual growth and happiness.
The spells cast by Wiccans are used to bring about good changes, not evil. Wicca encompasses peace, harmony and spiritual energy. The spells and rituals bring them closer to the mother goddess. The spells are meant to bring about positive changes to the earth and it’s inhabitants. The Wiccan spell book is called “The Book of Shadows”
Many people who practice this form of witchcraft are members of a coven. This is a like minded group of individuals that get together on a regular basis to practice their craft. When witches gather together in a circle, they believe their magic is stronger. The person who leads the coven is referred to as a high priest or priestess.
Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, is the Wiccan’s most sacred holiday.

I always hate it when fanatical religious groups say Wiccans are devil worshippers. Nothing could be further from the truth. They are some of the most gentle people I know.
I agree with you, Coretta. Wiccans are cool people!
I am inclined to agree with the poster above. People that practice Wicca, are great people. The belief predates Christianity. Lisabeth
I agree. Those I have known believe in natural healing, and putting out good vibes in the universe. What could be wrong with that?
